Benefit the nation and the people     Manage the heaven and the earth

The emblem of School of Economics and Management is made up of inner and outer circles, with red and white background, implying harmony and aggressiveness. Red, green and yellow-based color as a whole means passion, vitality and hope, warmth and nobleness. The main pattern of the inner circle is respectively abstracted from the first letter “J” and “G” of Pinyin initial letter of “Jingji”(Economy) and “Guanli”(Management). As for “G” , three branches in its upper half means moral, intellectual, physical development of our students, while with the image of the letter “E”, the first letter of “Earth”, it symbolizes the earth, width and broadness. As for “J”, its image looks like a palm or a new bud, meaning great enthusiasm, infinite vitality, flourish. The emblem of the School has both an obvious logo and a vivid image of the earth held up by a palm. It echoes with the School motto “Benefit the nation and the people, Manage the heaven and the earth”, encouraging students to keep not only clarity of vision, but also down-to-earth dedication.

“Benefit the nation and the people” means tomake the society prosperous and the people happy, which is a guideline held by ancient wise men. The first part of School motto is full of humanistic feelings to help people equally enjoy great quality of life and work,integrating personal aspiration into continuous effort for the benefits of the majority. It is a kind of sublimation of personality beliefs and improvement of individual quality, necessary for social progress. Especially twenty words of“Shanxi Merchants”spirit, written byGeneral Secretary Xi during his inspection in Shanxi Province,further enrich the connotation of“Benefit the nation and the people”.

“Manage the heaven and the earth”. “The heaven and the earth”, firstly means the universe, according to an famous Chinese ancient book called I Ching. It secondly means the sun and the moon, according to a famous poet Du Fu in Tang Dynasty in his poem “Ascending Yueyang Tower”. It thirdly means the country, territory, world. Fourthly, it also refers to the overall situation, seen the poem of Chen Yi, one of the ten Marshals of PRC. The second part of the School motto aims at encouraging students to explore the law of management, mind the world, have loyalty and immortal personality.

School of Economics and Management is inspired by its motto “Benefit the Nation and the People, Manage the Heaven and the Earth”. The School is making great strides towards exploring the law of economics and management, aggregating collective wisdom, and benefiting the society with open, honest, innovative minds.
